Shifting Mindsets for a Post-Pandemic Economy
Ramon joined Jim Blasingame for an interview to discuss how to identify and eliminate pre-pandemic practices & behaviors that could prevent businesses from surviving in the post-pandemic economy. Things will look and happen differently in a post-pandemic world, so businesses need to shift their outlook and stay focused on goals, even during times that feel harder than ever to focus.
Jim mentioned that he has been rejecting the phrase “new normal” and instead likes the idea of a “new regular”, when discussing our post-pandemic world. Normal is definitely a word with multiple connotations, and not all of them are positive. Many people have commented that our pre-pandemic world wasn’t actually normal, and many of our daily habits and schedules were too much of a load for many people, causing burnout. Regular implies something else — it offers more customization from person to person, vs. trying to fit into a normal that might not work for you.
So how does that have to do with business growth and success? Well, for many people, “normal” means staying where you are, and rejecting change. Ramon urges businesses to think bigger — many of the businesses that he’s mentoring and speaking to are thinking too small for these times. Now is the time to do things differently than you’ve done them before. We need to deal with the reality of coming out of a shutdown, but there is always opportunity in how you think and consider what’s happening. Ramon is hoping that individuals and businesses start to think bigger regarding what they want for themselves, and this includes making a shift from how we did business pre-pandemic.
Many small businesses fail because the business model isn’t loved or needed by the customer, bad money management practice, or because the business can’t get out of its own way. When Ramon works with businesses he sees that they will heed all the great resources they have, but are not always listening to the advice or taking the necessary actions to create change.
COVID-19 hit us all by storm, and while we are still dealing with it head on, the skies are beginning to clear, and it’s time to start picking ourselves — and our businesses — back up. And the best way to do this is to be open to new ideas and new ways of thinking.
