Ignition Video Series: Pamela Slim on How to Turn Writing Into a Business

Infusionsoft just recently launched their new video series, Ignition, a fun and informative way to answer small business owner's questions about running and growing a small business. Each week, the show tackles one question from their viewership and brings a successful entrepreneur / business expert into their "success lab" to help answer. In this episode, they are joined by Pamela Slim, author of "Escape from Cubicle Nation" and "Body of Work".

This is box title
Question of the Week: “I’m sick of working in an office and want to be an entrepreneur. I’m good at writing but I don’t know how to turn it into a business. There are a million writer’s out there. How do I establish if there is a market out there for what I do and how do I distinguish myself?”

Here are a few main points from the episode:

1. Explore the Industry

Pam explains that in order to see if there is a potential business opportunity for you, you must explore the market and see all the ways that people are hiring writers.  In addition, it is important to figure out what section of the market you want to serve and how you can stand out.

2.  Self-Discovery

Find your passion and what part of the market that you want to work in.  Ask your friends, family members and colleagues as many questions as you can about writing to really learn everything you can and what area of the industry you are most interested in.

3. Leave a footprint

Pam explains that we only have one life.  One chance to live.  Determine how badly you want it and how badly you want to put your skills to use and do whatever it takes to make it happen.

4. Don't Be Afraid of Failure

Carey shares her own personal experience of failing as an entrepreneur and shares that it is important to experience failure so that you can learn and thrive from it.  She says that the entrepreneurial journey is not always full of glory and sometimes you have to suffer through some failures to learn how to be good at what you do.
