Question of the Week: My couples counseling business has been growing slowly but steadily over the last three years. I have a decent newsletter list and a number of people have suggested that I start a podcast. I think it could be a great idea since I have a lot of content that I can cover but there are a few problems: 1) I don’t know how to make my content different than a lot of other relationship podcasts out there. 2) I can’t stand the sound of my voice. I know that sounds superficial but it really bothers me. 3) I don’ t know what kind of strategy I need…HELP!

John Lee Dumas shares his expert tips and advice to help this week's develop a unique and engaging podcast:

Make Your Podcast Stand Out

Here are three simple steps for making your podcast stand out from the rest:

Be Different - Find out what other podcasts aren't doing and what void you can fill.

Find the USP - Identify what your unique selling proposition is. What can your listeners only get from listening to your podcast?

Be Yourself - No matter how many other relationship podcasts are out there, yours will be different and unique because you have your own special personality.

Develop a Strategy

There are a couple of strategies that can be employed as: 1) a podcast host and 2) as a relationship coach. Here are a few of the possible strategies to starting your own podcast:

Interview-Based Podcast - This is a great way to reach out to authority figures in the industry and feature them as a guest on the show to share their message with your audience.

Designated Topics - Cover topics in a 1 to 1 manner with your audience that are important to your listeners.

Q&A Show - Ask your audience to submit questions for your podcast and cover them during your show. This is a great way to build listener engagement and develop a community.
