Staples’ Commitment to Small Business Customers Goes Deeper than Logos and Designs

Every year, millions of small business owners and entrepreneurs turn to Staples for their business needs, whether it is office supplies, furniture, technology, or even print and marketing materials. As a small business owner and regular Staples customer myself, I understand! But to get the scoop on this phenomenon from someone “on the inside,” I packed up my video camera and headed to the Staples store in Midtown Manhattan.

Staples Commitment to Small Business

Once inside, I met up with Amy Lang for an exclusive interview. Amy is the Vice President of Print Merchandising for Staples, and the first thing I asked her was, in her opinion, why do small business owners seem to be drawn to Staples like a moth to the flame? Her answer was twofold: it is because of the offerings as well as the expertise.

Offerings

Most small business owners are well aware of Staples’ offerings when it comes to business supplies and technology. Whether you run out of paper, need a computer chair, or are looking for a new printer, you can turn to Staples for the items you need to keep your business going.

But in the modern era, Staples also has the things you need to keep your business growing. In addition to self-service and full-service printing, Staples offers a wide assortment of marketing services. Business cards, brochures, postcards, and even commercial signs are available, making Staples a one-stop-shop for all your marketing materials.

Expertise

According to Amy, small business owners also choose Staples because of the expertise of staff members. She says that in her print division, associates are trained to know the production side of printing, but also to understand customers’ needs. Therefore, associates can help you figure out the exact products and services you can benefit from, and design experts can help you create the perfect print and marketing materials.

Amy says that one of the keys to success is that Staples puts a lot of time and effort in training great supervisors. Supervisors get experience in multiple stores with a goal of identifying their talents and building their skills. By investing in supervisors, they build strong leaders who can manage and inspire other team members.

Advice: Make the Right Investment Upfront

When I asked Amy her tips for small business owners, she quickly responded that they should make the right investment upfront.

In particular, Amy says that you should spend extra time and energy with your initial marketing materials, to make sure the design is right. You can get help from Staples design experts and should view it as an investment in the future of your business.

“If you really spend that upfront time, then every dollar you invest in your marketing materials thereafter is a dollar well spent.”

The Deeper Meaning of a Logo

A story that Amy shared with me during the interview demonstrates the deeper meaning of a logo. She tells me of a customer who came into her Staples store to get some of the marketing materials he ordered. The man owned a business that picks up bags from the airport when you lose them and delivers them to your house. He started the business himself and grew to hire a few employees. He was so excited when he came in to pick up hats and jackets with his business logo on them.

She shared, “He was near tears saying, ‘I am so proud. This my company. I have a logo. I have employees.’ And he did it from the ground up and that, having his logo on something, was a really powerful thing. It gives me chills to think about.”

The same is true for you. Your business logo is much more than just a picture or words. It is a symbol of your accomplishments and should be a great source of pride. People choose Staples because the store’s associates are excited to help you with your investment and proud to be part of your business’s journey.

“It was a really powerful moment for me,” says Amy. “It really helped me to understand why we do what we do.”
